If you’ve ever used the Tube in London, you’ve seen the admonition to “Mind the Gap” at each stop. This made me think about the gap between the wonderful historical traditions we experienced in England and our American existence.

I wrote “Fare Thee Well Fond Memory” just after my son’s last high school basketball game. As I looked at a photo of him on the playing court, it felt as if that beautiful memory was quickly evaporating.

I wrote “Canary” in 2000, when I directed the Office of Student Affairs at the Ohio State University College of Pharmacy. Teaching and working with students has been one of the great joys of my life, and I feel that this poem captured that emotion very well.
