In the evening, in the wintertime,
Weather falling only in my mind.
Still, I can find you sitting, rocking
By a fireplace. Such a smiling
Rests upon your face and not a trace of tear.
Silent crackle and a warming roar,
Your hand touches mine, but it wants much more.
And I can see the powers that be have let you know me.
In the morning, on a summer’s day,
Barefoot wonder seems so far away,
But I can dream us there.
Running, laughing near the waterside.
Dancing, turning, with the birds we glide.
As your eyes burn through mine,
I see you’ve come to know me.
But it’s autumn now, and the sky is grey.
Geese are flocking to a warmer day,
And still I see the powers that be
Have let you know me.
You’ve come to know me. Autumn, 1980
You’ve Come to Know Me
In the evening, in the wintertime,
Weather falling only in my mind.

By a fireplace. Such a smiling
Rests upon your face and not a trace of tear.
Silent crackle and a warming roar,
Your hand touches mine, but it wants much more.
And I can see the powers that be have let you know me.
